We generally refer to the Guest House Era as the period from the 1930s to 1960s when almost every building on the Esplanade offered accommodation to visitors to the town, but the hospitality industry predates the town itself-the Roadknights (the first settlers) operated their home Merrangbaur as a guest house way back in the 1860s.
In response to the many queries we receive from people wanting to revisit a favourite holiday venue from their childhood or reminisce about a honeymoon, the Lakes History Centre is featuring an exhibition of some of the many guest houses and hotels. This will include the earliest available photos and changes through to the present time, together with a bit of the history and anecdotes about the owners, guests and notable events involving the various establishments
Claremont House was established in 1911 and purchased at auction by Tasman & Alice Roadknight in 1921.
Alice Roadknight had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the official opening of the Cunninghame Arm footbridge in 1937.

Joy Wilmshurst has also curated a display of accoutrements of the era.
All visitors are welcome during our normal opening house 10-12 Tuesdays morning and 1.30-4pm Saturday afternoons.
